iPod and I
March 21, 2008 Hello. It's a full moon. And it's snowing like a mofo. I've been going through my music to help give me some ideas on what I should write about and I'm struggling a bit. I could write about the slight disappointment the M. Ward/Zooey Deschanel collaboration, She & Him, turned out to be, but to be fair I've only listened to it once through. Maybe it'll sink in after a couple more spins. It has gotten generally good reviews but something about it didn't seem to click for me on first listen, at least not like any of the three previous M. Ward discs.
I could talk about how insanely catchy the Vampire Weekend disc is. Yeah, it's probably trendy as hell, and maybe I won't even be listening to it six months from now (although I think I will be), but at this particular moment it's the bomb.
Or perhaps you missed the final link in that obnoxiously long blog entry from a couple weeks ago. If so, here is a second helping of insanity, courtesy of Dan Deacon.
But ultimately, what I'm going to do is put the iPod on shuffle and see what comes up for the next 20 songs. I'm pushing play now...
1. Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel
What else can you say about this song other than classic?
2. Against The 70's - Mike Watt
There are some great songs on Watt's first solo disc, including this one. And the guest list is unbelievable.
3. Limb By Limb - Sebadoh
Pretty noisy stuff. Nice Cookie Monster vocals towards the second half of the song.
4. Hold Me Now - Elastica
Nice little song. Good debut.
5. Like Eating Glass (Ladytron Zapatista Mix) - Bloc Party
Eh, I'll take the original over this remix.
6. Flashback - Ministry
Reminds me of "Alternative Night" at Molly's in Oshkosh. The goths loved their Ministry
7. Marquee Moon - Television
I love it. A "moon" song during the full moon. It's serendipity.
8. Exit Only - Fugazi
I dig Fugazi. As time goes on, at least three of their discs have steadily climbed their way up amongst my all time favorites.
9. Cold Night - The Folk Implosion
This song is off of Dare To Be Suprised, which is completely underrated. One of the best things Lou Barlow has done, in my opinion.
10. Sensitive Euro Man - Pavement
Another one of my favorite bands. Man, my iPod is killin' right now!
11. Don't Bother - Sam Prekop
Both of his solo discs are pretty great. This song is pretty chilled out and nice.
12. Starship Trooper a. Life Seeker b. Disillusion c. Wurm - Yes
It was only a matter of time before we got to some classic prog-rock. I love it.
13. Romulus - Sufjan Stevens
Great lyrics. Incredibly sad song. I was just thinking about this song and "Bird Stealing Bread" from Iron & Wine this morning, and how I love the lyrics in both. It's nice that iPod is playing it for me right now.
14. This Moment - Matthew Sweet
From one of the truly great compilation discs of the 90's: Sweet Relief - A Benefit for Victoria Williams.
15. Half Light - Athlete
Occasionally, the iPod plays something that I've never heard before. This is one of those occasions. It's ok.
16. Singapore - Tom Waits
Tom Waits is definitely a "mood" thing - you're either in the mood for the carnival, or you're not. Right now, the carnival sounds good to me.
17. Over The Hills And Far Away - Led Zeppelin
I've maybe heard this song 1,563,782 times in my life and I still dig it.
18. Where There's A Will There's A Whalebone - Islands
A good example of a disc that I just never gave much of a chance. This song is pretty interesting, indie meets hip-hop.
19. Attack - Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
My iPod is thinking... "I will play one song by The Folk Implosion and one song from the Blues Explosion and screw with Al's head."
20. Tiptoe - Goldfrapp
There are some incredible songs on Black Cherry. However, this just happens to not be one of them. Not that it's bad, but I usually skip it...which I am doing now.
Overall, good job, iPod. Thank you for helping write my blog. Have a good evening.
