Hooks
April 19, 2008 Hooks. Pop music is filled with them, regardless of whether the song is good or very, very evil. The point is the hook is going to stick with you, even when you'd rather poke your eardrum repeatedly with a pencil. Why am I writing about this? Because a couple of weeks ago while I was getting a haircut, I found myself inanely whistling along to a Huey Lewis song that was on the radio. The girl who was cutting my hair asked, "So you get down to Huey Lewis?" What could I say at that point, other than "Uh yeah, this Huey song is alright, but I've really been listening to this band called Menomena - you should check them out." Too late. My cover's blown. I'm a complete slave to pop music, not to mention a total dork.
So in lieu of that moment, here is a list of decent (some classic and some recent) pop songs that I can always go back to guilt-free:
California - Luna
Tears Of A Clown - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles
Here Comes The Sun - The Beatles
Turn, Turn, Turn - The Byrds
So. Central Rain - R.E.M.
Someday We'll Be Together - Diana Ross & The Supremes
Have You Ever Seen The Rain? - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Could You Be The One - Husker Du
Heroes - David Bowie
Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
Chinese Translation - M. Ward
Boys Don't Cry - The Cure
Sweet Jane - The Velvet Underground
Gold Soundz - Pavement
As a sidenote, I've been listening to a mixed cd made by a very close friend of mine (thank you!!). She chose to close the disc with this version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow, which is how I will be closing this blog entry. Have a good evening.
