All Around Al's World of Sound: Beaver 08
Back in third grade, my friend Al liked music and baseball. Al is still my friend, and he still likes music and baseball. He was a breakdancer in high school. We used to look at his dad's Playboys after school sometimes.
FUNKY 4+1
November 10th, 2008 It's almost a week after the election... how do you feel? I'm just happy that I no longer have to receive these ridiculous mailers on how Obama is in league with The Devil, eats babies for breakfast, kicks the elderly for laughs, etc. If I were on the fence on who to vote for (and I definitely was not on the fence), I strongly feel that those mailers would've had the exact opposite effect that the RNP was hoping for. But that could just be the contrarian in me, I don't know. What I do know is that this is as far as I'll go with political talk, since my gig on this site is to talk music. I have no problem leaving the politics for Milty and Mr. Koppa to discuss.
I was originally thinking about doing a short list of political songs and four immediately came to mind: Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Fortunate Son," CSNY's "Ohio," R.E.M.'s "Green Grow The Rushes," and Public Enemy's "Fight The Power." And then I blanked out. For whatever reason, I started to think about the early days of rap. I believe hearing Gang Starr's "Manifest" for the first time in years (which in itself is not considered to be a song from the early days since it came out in 1989, but whatever) kind of spurred me in that direction. So here is a list of rap songs from the genre's first wave, roughly 1978 to 1984, prior to Run DMC breaking things wide open for rap in the mainstream:
Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five - The Message
The Funky 4 +1 - That's The Joint
Afrika Bambaataa and The Soulsonic Force - Planet Rock
Sugarhill Gang - Apache
Kurtis Blow - The Breaks
Treacherous Three - The Body Rock
T La Rock and Jazzy Jay - It's Yours
OK, did you check out that Grandmaster Flash video? Those outfits look like a cross between George Clinton's mid-70's P-Funk and Judas Priest circa British Steel. Crazy. Perhaps MacVane, Webs, Milty, Mr. Koppa, Conz, and myself may consider dressing up as GMF and The Furious Five for Halloween '09. I doubt that it would be any crazier than that video. On second thought, maybe it would be, but still, that video is totally bananas.
Have a good evening.
