Reflecting on The Sphere(s)

by Mike Koppa last modified 2008-04-23 01:46

March 23, 2008 Spring. It snowed like mad here on the vernal equinox, after a week of slow melt. Today, Easter, funny white-out blizzard with wet dead end at about 4 pm, and then sunshine and 35 degrees by 5. Nutty. The cat's got the runs really bad...new litter box behind me. Squirts about every two hours. It's terrible. I've gotta do something about her diet. Okay. Now I feel terrible. I'll do something. I promise. But I did learn about this new litter, and it's making everybody happy.

Spheres? Yep. Used them a lot in the CROPP annual report I just finished. I called it O for organic, and reefered to them as portholes to illustrate a timeline. Worked out pretty good. Here, they're portholes back to 2003. (I'm hanging them at Mars Cafe as the moon waxes to the full Pink.) And it all goes back to 1993. What's with the spheres? You are the center of your own universe.

Problem today, around here anyway, is that art is a lot more than making pretty pictures. It seems to be about using up every minute I've got, and I've always had a little trouble getting in step with it all. Right now, for example, I've got to gather, dust off, and freshen up the work for the Des Moines show. It's all in the basement, where the "collage and sculpture studio" is, which is being remodeled with new plumbing and cleaned up walls and painted floor and more, and that's all a part of art. And then I decided to play ten songs at Mars, and I have to practice those a little bit so I don't make a fool out of myself (the whole point is to sell a few cds to pay for the blasted gas to get there and back). And on top of that, garden season is knocking on the door and there's seeds to get into soil and into the greenhouse, and we consider that art, too. And then there's this sensational web site I'm dedicated to updating moonly, which has, so far, sucked up at LEAST 10 hours in the past 7 days, and well...that's it...unless you include the top priorities to manage before (or alongside) all of it...home life.

It's sort of a pain in the ass...even stressful sometimes. And it's all voluntary...you might even say it's charitable. I mean, I'm trying to make a few extra bucks, but I'm not. Well, maybe a few, but not many. I often ask myself, "Why?" And I can never come up with a better reason than "Because I just do." It also might have something to do with me being Catholic...when you're raised Catholic (like it or not), you're encouraged to use the gifts God gave you for the greater common good. I suppose it's debatable whether or not I'm contributing to the greater common good, but that's a risk I'm willing to take. And as far as all the bad rap Catholocism gets...whatever. I'm Polish, too.

Beyond that, under this Worm Moon, within this particular sphere, there's too much going on for me to write anything interesting.
