Lunarly speaking: Wolf 09

by Mike Koppa last modified 2009-03-17 22:30

Every once in while, relatively, I have an idea. For 2009, I will commit to sharing one of them on or around every single full moon. No kidding.

Wolf Moon
Welcome to the future, Mr Koppa

Garbage. Particularly plastic garbage. Surely by now you've heard about the garbage continent in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The linked article says there might be no solution, that all we can do is try to stop it from getting worse by reducing or eliminating our use of plastics. It also warns that sooner or later, sure, it will all sink, but that it would disturb fragile ecosystems there.

But I got an idea. I live in the country, and I see those giant plastic sleeves they use to wrap winter feed for the livestock...or something like that...the things that make silos unnecessary. I like silos, but that's beside the point. I see these things, and I think, hey...could you wrap all that shit up and seal it and let it float there?

A mass of gigantic floating plastic hot dogs, bobbing there like the logs they used to tug down the rivers. Sure, it might be an eyesore, but who would see it? I'll tell you who'd see it...tourists! Call it art, a la Christo...shoot maybe he could even arrange it. Somebody call him and let him know. Market it. A sight to behold. Sell tickets on cruise ships to help offset the cost of the project. Or maybe if somebody proposes it the right way it could be one of the government gigs our next President talks about. Somebody do it.

Or, hell, if it's not too much work, tube it all up and tug it home and create a monument to our error someplace on the West coast. Surely California could use another roadside attraction. Stack it. Make a Stonehenge out of the shit. No wait...it's the size of Texas. Put it in Texas! No, no. I've heard Austin is pretty cool. And I like Willie Nelson too much to screw up his town.

I did have the idea that you could sink it...out of mind out of sight...but that was before I read the article. Is it toxic because it's plastic, or is it toxic because when it breaks down it gets ingested by the marine life? Sink it in 55 gallon drums? Sort of takes the fun out of it, but whatever.

But what the hell am I thinking...it's ten million square miles of plastic. Way to go, man. Way to go.

And now a brief update on studio-related activity

Let's start with my new motorcycle, the 1984 Moto Guzzi 850 T5. The seat is almost 25 years-old, and it's really soft. I need to have it rebuilt. If there's one thing that drew me to Moto Guzzis in the first place, it was the flat, bench-style seats on the older models...the Ambassodors, El Dorados, V7 Sports, T3s and T4s. My bike has a really dumb looking 80s seat. But I'm going to take care of that, and a little bit of Photoshop time convinced me that everything's gonna be all right.

Next up, the basement. I had a mess, sort of like I had with the garage, but this one happens on a regular basis, it seems.

I had to clean up to frame this thing for work. The painting, while amusing at first, sort of gives me the creeps. And that gets me wondering why I have the creeps and then I figure it out. It represents what would happen if the Earth got creamed by a giant meteor or whatever. Everybody, including the livestock, gets launched into the air. All of the cows have broken legs and can't move. Most of them die. No more milk. Is this what happens at the end of the Mayan calendar in 2012? If you're like me and you've heard anything about it, it can freak you out. But you don't have worry. I googled it and everything's gonna be okay.
