Lunarly speaking: Harvest Moon 2009
Welcome to my irregular studio update. I used to try to show off some out-of-the-box thinking here (see the links below), but for now I'm just going to use this space to give some fairly objective reports on what I'm doing.
Pictured above are the flagstones I set in place in the backyard a few weeks ago. Same technique as the pavers I laid at our old house six or seven years ago...only this time I had the balls to not take it so seriously. I followed the rules, more or less, but this was a real seat-of-the-pants landscaping job. Basically, we needed to level off part of the back yard to put the firewood shelter there, then needed a path to the shelter. The rest of the yard has been filled by shovel and wheelbarrow with black dirt, to be planted partly with prairie grasses (acting as a privacy fence) and a small portion of lawn grass for a picnic table. With this part of the yard landscaping almost done, it means less time spent on landscaping next year and into the future. I'm pretty happy about that.
Ripped out the carpet in the living room. Next order of business is painting and minor remodeling. When it's done, we can move everything out of the playroom to make room for the letterpress studio. Setting up the press "in the parlour" is something that was strongly advised by one of my college professors. I'm pretty pumped to finally be at a point in my life where I actually make that happen. I had hoped to have the press set up by the end of 2009, but now it's looking more like early 2010.
First order of business once the press is set up will be resurrecting the Crux project with Dave Jarecki as editor-in-chief of Crux III. It's a long story. Maybe you'll hear it (or read it) sometime. But for now I'm logging off because I'm ready to start getting some regular sleep. Feels good to be 40. It's like I have an excuse to slow down...like the pressure's off. Now I can finally say, "I'm too old for that."
