I went to Ralph Waldo Emerson school for kindergarten. My teacher's name was Mrs. McCloud. She had a jar of magic oil (which was really Vaseline) and on our birthdays she would anoint us with it on our foreheads. No one ever taught me a damn thing about Ralph Waldo Emerson or the very New American concept of self reliance. I learned about it when I was looking for something to teach some junior high students in 2003. Generally speaking, I think self reliance is an important concept to teach our children, and I'm pretty sure it's not happening.
